Safety switches and smoke alarms
Safety switches on the board, and mains-powered smoke alarms through the property.
Overview
The work
A safety switch, or RCD, cuts the supply when it detects current leaking to earth. Older boards often carry fuses or circuit breakers and have no RCD on any circuit, which is one of the common reasons a board gets upgraded.
Smoke alarm requirements in Victoria depend on when the property was built and when it was last renovated. Mains-powered alarms are wired back to the switchboard and carry a backup battery. Where alarms are interconnected, one alarm sounding sets off the rest.
